Prof. Dr Arshad Javaid

Introduction

Prof. Arshad Javaid is a clinical academic leader, who has served in some of the best healthcare institutions in Pakistan and abroad. Hailing from Karak district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, he has made it to top ranking positions in healthcare through his hard work, grit and determination. Having completed his secondary education from the prestigious Cadet College Kohat, he joined Khyber Medical College, Peshawar to pursue a medical degree. After graduation, Prof. Arshad moved to the United Kingdom and got advanced training in the field of Pulmonology and Lung health. He holds a fellowship in the field of chest medicine of the Royal College of Physicians, UK, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP).

Prof. Javaid is a pioneer in the field of Pulmonology in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has served as a Professor of pulmonology at the post-graduate Medical Institute (PGMI), Peshawar and as the Dean of the faculty of Pulmonology of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) Pakistan. Prof. Arshad has authored more than 150 academic publications and won numerous competitive research grants proving his mettle as a research leader. He pioneered the Pakistan Chest Society and is currently the Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Chest Medicine. Prof. Javaid has also served on the Strategic Advisory Committee of the National TB Control program and developed TB management and control guidelines for Pakistan. He was also instrumental in the development of the tobacco control guidelines and their incorporation in the TB and Lung health guidelines.

Prof. Javaid has held several clinical academic leadership positions in the past including postings as the Vice-Chancellor of Khyber Medical University (KMU) Pakistan, Dean Postgraduate Medical Institute Peshawar, Dean Lady Reading hospital Peshawar the Chief Executive of Hayatabad Medical Complex and Lady Reading hospitals, rendering services to the latter at the peak of the terrorism wave in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Prof. Arshad was instrumental in the establishment of the Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Unit at the Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar, one of the most advanced research and treatment facility in the whole country.

Prof. Javaid held advisory positions in for the Global Fund supported initiatives of the National TB Control Program Pakistan and represents KP at the highest global foram. He is also the founding president of the Pakistan Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (PNQAHE). Prof. Arshad professional excellence has always been recognized at the national level and he has served in an advisory role at the Pakistan Health Research Council and the Prime Minister Task force on Health as a member. He was associated with the epic Regulatory Authority of medical profession as member of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) & its Executive committee. He chaired the Medical Education committee of PMDC which developed accreditation standards for undergraduate medical education. He is served as a member of the Board of Governors of Medical Teaching Institution of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad.
